The pharmacodynamic properties of cranberry are determined by the high content of type A proanthocyanidins, anthocyanins, phenolic acids, flavonols, and organic acids. Type A proanthocyanidins have the ability to alter the spatial configuration of bacterial adhesins, in particular fimbrial structures, which prevents their binding to receptor molecules of uroepithelial cells. The antioxidant mechanism is realized through the direct neutralization of reactive oxygen species and the suppression of intracellular signaling cascades that regulate the expression of pro-inflammatory genes. Synergy — Vaccinium oxycoccos

Synergistic interaction of cranberry has been confirmed in combination with other polyphenol-containing taxa. In combination with Vaccinium macrocarpon, an additive enhancement of anti-adhesive activity against bacterial strains is observed due to the summation of type A proanthocyanidin content. This effect has been described in in vitro models and is associated with an increase in the concentration of active fractions in the biological environment.

Potentiation of the antioxidant effect has been noted with the combined use with Camellia sinensis, which is manifested in an enhanced ability to neutralize reactive oxygen species and modulate the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators. Geography of Use and Traditional Medicine — Vaccinium oxycoccos

Small cranberry traditionally grows in the northern regions of Europe, Asia, and North America, including the territories of Scandinavia, the Baltic States, Russia, Canada, and the northern states of the United States of America. Ethnobotanical sources document its use among Finno-Ugric peoples, Slavic tribes, and Native American communities. Archaeoethnobotanical data indicate the use of cranberry fruits for food and medicinal purposes as early as the medieval period in Eastern Europe.

In Slavic tradition, cranberry was used in the form of decoctions and infusions of fruits for conditions accompanied by elevated body temperature and general weakness. Fruit drinks and concentrated berry decoctions were used as a general tonic during the cold season. In the northern regions of Russia and Siberia, cranberry fruits were considered "cleansing" and were used in rituals of spring renewal, symbolizing the purification of the body and space.

Among the peoples of the Baltic States and Scandinavia, cranberry was included in fermented beverages used during the off-season period. Ethnomedical sources indicate the use of berry juice for topical application to the skin for irritations and microdamages. In Finnish folk practice, cranberry was considered the berry of the power of the swamps and was associated with the cleansing properties of natural water bodies.

In Native American traditions of North America, the fruits were used as a component of dried mixtures with meat and fats, which ensured long-term storage and was considered a strengthening product during the cold season.
