Dioscorea polystachya is traditionally used in the folk medicine of East Asia, primarily in China, Korea, and Japan, where it is known under the names "shan yao" (山药), "san'yo," and "yama imo." In the ritual practices of Korea and parts of Japan, fresh slices of the tuber were used in cleansing baths or steam inhalations.

In the territory of Central Asia, Siberia, and Slavic cultural zones, reliable information on the use of Dioscorea polystachya in the pre-revolutionary period has not been found, however, after the inclusion of the plant in pharmacopoeial reviews of the 20th century, it began to be used in herbal mixtures inspired by Eastern tradition.
