Toxicity and Biosafety of Polygonum aviculare
Experimental studies indicate low acute toxicity of preparations based on Polygonum aviculare. According to preclinical data, upon oral administration of the aqueous extract to laboratory rats and mice, the lethal dose (LD₅₀) was not achieved even at doses exceeding 5000 mg/kg body weight, which allows the raw material to be classified as practically non-toxic.
With prolonged use at therapeutic doses (less than 500 mg/kg), no signs of hepato- or nephrotoxicity were observed. The absence of cumulative action and mutagenic activity has also been confirmed by in vivo and in vitro tests on cell cultures.
