The pharmacokinetics of Gynostemma pentaphyllum has not been studied sufficiently, however, generalized data on its main biologically active compounds — triterpene saponins, flavonoids, and polysaccharides — allow conclusions to be drawn about the proposed routes of absorption, distribution, and excretion depending on the dosage form.
With oral use (powder, dry extract, tincture), active components undergo primary contact with saliva and gastric juice enzymes. Saponins, despite their complex structure, are partially absorbed in the small intestine in unchanged form, and also undergo biotransformation under the action of intestinal microflora to aglycone forms, which have greater bioavailability.
