Synergy — Inula helenium
In vitro and in vivo studies confirm the pharmacological synergy of elecampane with a number of medicinal plants, which is manifested in the potentiation of anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects. Special attention is paid to interaction with plants containing essential oils, flavonoids, and prebiotic components.
The combined use of elecampane with purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) leads to enhanced phagocytic activity of macrophages and expression of Toll-like receptors on dendritic cells. In cell culture studies, a potentiating effect of the combination on the secretion of interleukin-12 and interferon-gamma has been recorded, indicating cooperation in the modulation of innate and adaptive immunity.
An additive and partially potentiating effect has been described when combining elecampane with plants containing lignans and phenylpropanoids, such as marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) and sage (Salvia officinalis). Geography of Use and Traditional Medicine — Inula helenium
Elecampane has a wide geography of traditional use, covering Europe, Asia, and partly North Africa. It was most widely distributed in the folk medicine of Slavic, Celtic, Germanic, Tibetan, and Chinese ethnocultural traditions. In Eastern Europe, especially in Russian, Belarusian, and Ukrainian phytotherapeutic traditions, elecampane was considered one of the most important root plants, included in home herbal medicine kits. It was used in the form of decoctions and infusions, as well as in the form of powder mixed with honey, lard, kvass, or hops. In Russian and Belarusian folk healing, it was called "devyatisil" or "devyatisilnik," attributed with nine healing abilities. It was also included in the collection for fumigating premises during illness or after a person's death, to cleanse the house of "bad breath."
In the Germanic tradition, the plant was known as Alantwurzel and was used since antiquity. It is mentioned in the works of Pliny the Elder and Dioscorides as a remedy that strengthens the body and spirit. In medieval Europe, elecampane was included in monastic herbal wines and elixirs, and was also used for flavoring beer and mead. In France and England, it was considered a component of elixirs "for decline of strength" and "for melancholy."
In Tibetan medicine, elecampane root was used as part of complex formulations for balancing cold and hot states. It is described in Tibetan treatises as a "plant of the earth," possessing a bitter and pungent taste and action directed at "wind" and "phlegm." In some formulations, elecampane was mixed with juniper berries, calamus, and resins.
