Spirulina (Powder)
Spirulina or Arthrospira is a blue-green alga that became famous after NASA successfully used it as a dietary supplement for astronauts on space missions. It has the ability to modulate immune functions and exhibits anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting the release of histamine. Arthrospira is of the cyanobacteria genus - blue-green alga of the Cyanophyceae class. Common people use mainly two species: Arthrospira Platensis and Arthrospira Maxima, which have the commercial name "Spirulina". Spirulina was a valuable product for the Aztecs and other tribes of Mesoamerica until the 16th century. Also, spirulina is traditionally harvested in Chad from the numerous lakes and ponds surrounding Lake Chad. The seaweed mass is pressed into flat cakes called Dihé, which are used later both for direct consumption and as an ingredient in soups. The main active component of Spirulina is Blue Phycobilin (Phycocyanobilin), which makes up about 1% of the mass of spirulina. This compound slows down NADPH oxidase reactions. For the reference: phagocytic cells, such as macrophages, are especially enriched with this enzyme. These oxidases are involved in the cellular antimicrobial defense system. High doses of spirulina reduce IL-4 levels by 32%, which is a significant reduction, and they exhibit a therapeutic effect in people suffering from allergic rhinitis.
Spirulina has been studied in vitro as an anti-HIV agent. The active component of the aqueous extract of Spirulina is sulfated calcium polysaccharide - spirulan (Ca-Sp). According to Dr. Hayashi's research, spirulan effectively stops the replication of several enveloped viruses, including herpes simplex virus type I, human cytomegalovirus, measles virus, mumps virus, influenza A virus, and human immunodeficiency virus.
The Indian healers Ramamurthy and Premakumari in a study administered spirulina supplements to patients with coronary heart disease and found significant reductions in blood cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol and an increase in HDL cholesterol.
Numerous studies have identified the effective use of spirulina in repairing damage to the body caused by various radiation therapies and chemotherapy, as well as in recovery after a stroke. Spirulina proves to be an effective drug for the treatment of diseases associated with age-related changes and memory loss. It is prescribed for diabetes, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and hay fever.
Dried Spirulina contains about 51% to 71% protein. It is a complete protein containing all the essential amino acids. The lipid content is about 7% of its mass, spirulina contains a large amount of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), alpha-linolenic acid, linoleic acid (LA), stearidonic acid (SDA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) ) and arachidonic acid (AA). Spirulina contains vitamins B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (nicotinamide), B6 (pyridoxine), B9 (folic acid), vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin A and vitamin E. Spirulina is also a source of potassium, calcium, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium, sodium and zinc. Spirulina contains 34 times more iron than spinach and 25 times more beta-carotene than raw carrots. Spirulina contains a variety of pigments, including beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, chlorophyll A, xanthophyll, echinenone, mixooxanthofil, kantha-xanthine, diatoxanthin, 3'-hydroxyechinenone, beta-cryptoxanthin and oscillaxanthin, phycobiliproteins, C-phycocyanin and allophycocyanin. Spirulina (Arthrospira) is able to inhibit (that is, restrain) the growth of some gram-negative (E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Proteus vulgaris) and gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and hay bacillus). In fact, spirulina produces extracellular metabolites with antibacterial activity.
Studies have been conducted that tested the antioxidant activity of spirulina in cases of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) poisoning, as well as arsenic, mercury chloride, chromium, cadmium, fluorine, and insecticide deltamethrin poisoning, as well as for the following antibiotics: tilmicosin, gentamicin and erythromycin.
