Garcinia hanburyi resin (Gamboge) has pronounced biological activity, while its toxicological profile has been studied in a number of preclinical studies. The main active component is gambogic acid, which has both cytotoxic and potentially hepatotoxic effects in high doses.

According to preclinical data on animals, the LD₅₀ value upon oral administration of the resin extract in mice is 178 mg/kg, which indicates the presence of moderate acute toxicity. Upon intravenous administration of gambogic acid in mice, the LD₅₀ value is 5.7 mg/kg, which requires caution in systemic use.

Toxic effects recorded in overdose in studies include diarrhea, drastic weight loss, hepatocellular changes, as well as in some cases — depression of the central nervous system and fatalities when the dosage is exceeded.

Based on the data obtained, the use of Garcinia hanburyi resin should be accompanied by strict dosing, especially in forms for internal use. In external forms (ointment, cream, oil infusion), toxicity does not manifest when dosages are observed.
