Standard Dosage (Powder): 1 gram of powder twice a day, 20 minutes before meals, with warm water. Course duration — 21 days.

Toxicity and Biosafety of Gymnopetalum chinense

Data from toxicological studies of Gymnopetalum chinense indicate low acute toxicity upon oral and external use. In studies on laboratory animals (rats, Mus musculus), it has been established that the aqueous and alcoholic extracts of the plant do not cause mortality or serious physiological disorders at doses up to 2000 mg/kg body weight. It is reported that LD₅₀ values (oral) exceed 5000 mg/kg, which classifies the plant as practically non-toxic according to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification (GHS).

External use in the form of ointments and oil infusions does not cause irritation of the skin and mucous membranes in control animals. Subchronic administration of the extract for 28 days did not cause changes in the weight of internal organs, behavior, or biochemical blood parameters.

Nevertheless, there are no systematic data on teratogenicity, mutagenicity, and reproductive toxicity in humans. In this regard, it is recommended to use preparations based on Gymnopetalum chinense with caution in pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children under 3 years of age.

Synergy — Gymnopetalum chinense

Synergistic activity of Gymnopetalum chinense has been confirmed in experiments on combination with other plant agents possessing anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. The most pronounced effects are observed with combined use with flavonoid-containing plants, such as Phyllanthus niruri and Andrographis paniculata. Potentiation of antioxidant activity and enhanced inhibition of neutrophil peroxidase activity have been established, which indicates an additive nature of interaction along the line of suppression of oxidative stress.

Combined use with Curcuma longa demonstrates a protective effect on hepatocytes, as well as more pronounced suppression of the activity of pro-inflammatory mediators (TNF-α, IL-6), which indicates the participation of a common mechanism through the NF-κB cascade. In an in vivo model, a modulating effect on the expression of antioxidant enzymes when combined with Camellia sinensis has been noted, which confirms tissue-specific synergy in the liver and skin.

Compatibility with Momordica charantia extracts has also been described, where an enhancement of the effect on carbohydrate metabolism and potentiation of α-glucosidase inhibitor activity were observed. This interaction has cellular and enzyme levels, confirmed by biochemical analyses.

Synergy mechanisms in most cases include cross-inhibition of inflammatory mediators, joint activation of antioxidant signaling pathways, and potentiation of immunomodulatory effects. The nature of the interaction is predominantly potentiating and modulating, especially with respect to cytokine cascades and liver enzyme systems. These effects are confirmed by in vitro and in vivo models published in pharmacological publications.

Geography of Use and Traditional Medicine — Gymnopetalum chinense

Gymnopetalum chinense is traditionally used in the folk medicine and ethnobotanical practices of South and Southeast Asia, including the southern provinces of China (Guangdong, Hainan, Yunnan), northern Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Burma, and Eastern India (Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Orissa). In India, the plant is known under the names kantakari and patala, and is used in the Ayurvedic and Siddha traditions. In the ethnomedical practice of the Munda and Naga peoples, the leaves and fruits of the plant are used for external and internal purposes.

In northern Thailand, the plant is known under the local name กระทุงเหิน and is used in the form of freshly squeezed juice and decoction. Leaf decoction is used for local washings and compresses, as well as in steam inhalations in village body purification procedures. The practices are characteristic of the folk medicine of the Karen, Shan, and northern Lao. Leaves were also used to make thick pastes with coconut oil, applied externally for conditions of body overheating.

In the villages of central Laos, the fruits of the plant were hung in dwellings as a talisman against the "evil branch" — the image of disease and the evil eye in the representation of the ethnic Kmu. The root of the plant was used as part of multicomponent collections for ablutions in healing rituals. Among the Shan peoples, gymnopetalum was considered a plant of internal purity, used as part of post-ritual cleansing baths. In Burma, the plant is described in folk herbals as a component of decoctions used for "balancing the fiery element" in the body.

In Chinese phytotherapy of the Ming Dynasty, the plant is mentioned as Ye Gua (wild cucumber) and is considered a "plant with cooling and drying action." According to surviving records, it was used in the form of a boiled decoction of fresh leaves, often in combination with other cucurbits. In the southern rural culture of Guangdong, the plant was collected before the onset of heat and dried for storage in bags made of bamboo fiber.

Historically, the first written mentions of Gymnopetalum chinense are found in the ethnographic chronicles of the North Indian principalities of the 19th century, as well as in colonial botanical surveys of British naturalists. In addition to medical use, the plant had symbolic significance: in the cultures of several tribes, leaves were laid under the threshold on the days of a child's birth as protection from evil spirits. In Laos, the use of seeds as part of ritual smoking aimed at purifying the dwelling from "energies of disease" has been recorded.
