Geography of Use and Traditional Medicine — Quercus infectoria
Quercus infectoria has long been used in the ethnomedical practices of the peoples of Asia Minor, Iran, India, Turkey, Pakistan, and parts of Southeast Asia. In the Persian traditional medicine known as "tebb-e sonnati," the galls of this oak were revered as one of the most important astringent remedies used to strengthen tissues, relieve internal heat, and "dry out" excessive body moisture. Iranian and Turkish healers used decoctions of galls externally for skin treatments, as well as in the form of washes and wraps.
In the Indian Ayurvedic tradition, galls of Quercus infectoria were classified as "katu" (astringent) and "shita" (cooling) in their energetics. They were included in powders applied locally to wounds and erosions. In addition, Quercus infectoria was used for fabric processing, which provided both preservative and antiseptic effects. In the southern states of India, galls were ground into a paste and used in ritual healing practices associated with purification and protection of the body.
